Sm4sh: SBphiloz4 (Zelda) VS Greed (Cloud)

Note: these games are from the previous patch, before Cloud got nerfed & Zelda got buffed. Some things may happen now with the new changes & some things may not so just keep in mind.

Winners Finals Game 2: DH

Vod: https://youtu.be/z6bAjxvsbes?t=3m4s

Time notation via in-game clock

6:00 lol DF on dropped shield right from the get-go. No reason for the second one as Cloud was close enough to run in & punish (& he does lol).
5:53 don't like that falling Nair, but forced him to shield even if he could've got another Uair in.
5:51 good spacing to avoid his Nair, but the DJ was bad. Possible Nair punish, but landing would be good too.
5:49 forced him to Limit camp. If Cloud doesn't have limit, walling him out shouldn't be you priority unless you got him stuck by the edge & you're nearby to pressure him.
5:48 dumb shield on Cloud's part, missed potential punish
5:46 no need to jump here. Never want to be directly above or below Cloud without the option of a shield,
5:45 hard position, the fastfall required a well-timed airdodge since Cloud can cover that ground before Zelda lands like so. Probably could've landed on the tree without the fastfall.
5:43 another rough situation. I think maybe no DI or slight DI away to land on the middle branch might've saved you
5:39 useless panic roll
5:37 in a rare situation where you both SH together, towards each other at close range & he charges Limit; your Fair will win if sweetspot. After short period of time where you both get to close, you could FF Nair & get a potential follow up, but he could also LC Uair.
Since you both land you somehow got a Jab -> weak DA lol
5:34 again don't jump when Cloud is directly above you. He could've easily Dair, FF Uair or Nair (even if it isn't optimal)
5:32 OoS FW1 would've gave you some room to breathe here, plus he was inside of you so OoS LK wouldn't work & Nair is too high.
5:28 great pivot grab
5:26 bad jump again
5:24 he missed Uair punish, gets Jab instead
5:19 not the best of falling Nairs. Not too sure who would win here if you were a bit closer to him
5:18 both shields up, Zelda behind Cloud & out of range for shield grab. There isn't a lot either character could do to each other, though Cloud is the only one that could go offensive here with Bair, Nair or TA Jab. Problem is Bair & Nair need to be spaced which requires a slight loss in stage control to avoid punishment. Drop shield TA Jab is unreactable, but if it hits shield then Cloud loses.
That being said that spacing of his Bair was p bad tho
5:16 you ran too far, with him having limit you can afford to play more defensively & hold centre stage. And bad jump lol
5:14 Pointless Dair. Got you scarred into giving up control, so he can limit your recovery. Zelda can benefit from going further away from the stage to recover & that plus recovering from above guarantees you the ledge.
5:08 lol the wait. He fucked up the RAR Bair & got punished. I quite like crouching in positions like this because I'm lowering my hurtbox in case he hits high & can press shield if he decides to hit low (without grabbing)
5:05 missed edgeguard, jumped offstage too early & caused you to DJ too low so that Cloud has a free high recovery.
5:01 wtf lol
5:00 terrible Nair
4:57 can't challenge his Dair, you got yourself stuck offstage without being able to grab the ledge, giving him time to charge limit
4:53 good shield, missed punish. Usmash or FW would be optimal if you see them moving into your shield
4:50 bad DA
4:48 bad Bair, he shielded after his Dtilt. Missed potential Nair follow up
4:44 good attempt, but he spaced his Bair well this time.
4:42 two bad Nairs in succession
4:38 good AD
4:36 rough position. Probably jump to the tree on the right or roll.
4:32 probably meant to be a reverse Limit Blade Beam, which would've hit you btw.
4:29 bad Fsmash on shield
4:26 ugly, shield wasn't a great decision, nor was dropping shield as he got close. Good escape from Cross Slash but you missed an opportunity to punish by DJ.
4:21 his Dair clipped the very side of your shield while moving away, FW had no chance of hitting. Probably had enough time to drop shield & IDA since he had landing lag
4:19 SHAD Fair doesn't work =/ might've clipped him with Nair 1 tho.
4:16 since this Cloud likes to play more defensively & charges Limit, that Phantom was p bad. So were the DFs afterwards, he doesn't give a fuck.
4:11 terrible FW, got Fsmashed
4:07 good drift away
4:03 that dash got you hit. Can't shield during dash in this game.
3:58 cute Phantom, bad FW
3:52 no grab?
3:41 that should've been the game if he didn't hold shield as DF started.
3:35 missed Usmash punish. Would've killed too
3:30 missed edgeguard, got Fair'd lol
3:18 good landing catch
3:16 another missed edgeguard
3:08 Exhibit A on why you should always be careful with Dashing in this game

Stocks lost
- Limit CS edgeguard
- Limit CS near the edge, ran into it.

Notes:
- Projectile camping is ineffective on Clouds willing to Limit camp. Better to play aggro on N Cloud & play defensively on L Cloud
- Don't challenge Cloud if he is directly above or below you
- If your edgeguards aren't on point, there is nothing wrong with not going for them & try to punish the opponent's ledge options via reads & whiff punishing.
- Dashing in this game is a substantial commitment, as you lose the ability to shield for X number of frames (can't remember exactly but it's enough to get punished for hence the ending).
- Recognise which OoS options are available to you depending on your opponent's spacing.

6:00 lol that walk. Dashed back just a tad late & got clipped
5:57 bad TA on Cloud’s part, seems accidental from the shield grab he done. Decent Jab -> Grab punish.
Missed Nair follow up.  Needed to Dash TA to catch him there
5:52 good read on Cloud’s GUA. With the way you were facing you needed to cross him up for a guaranteed follow-up, but Cloud tried to be greedy so you got it anyways.
5:50 possible Nair combo finisher after the Utilts. I did like you retreating from Cloud to get away from being directly beneath tho. That jump into him though was awful.
5:48 looked unsure here with the DJAD. I personally would go to the ledge, as the moving platform was moving towards you. Going directly to the platform was a bad idea because Uair lol. Useless Nair after getting hit
5:45 bad Nair. Both shields up, neither could grab. Decent roll away
5:43 if he’s charging Limit he ain’t coming close, so the NL wasn’t great. He missed a punish opportunity because he did a bad shield.
That Fsmash was a punish opportunity, & you need to recognize these opportunities.
5:41 shield’s up, grabbable, he rolls & you spotdodge.
Decent Dtilt to DA string to knock him offstage.
5:38 good Dair
5:35 this whole time Cloud should’ve just waited on stage to charge Limit.
5:28 drifted too much towards him.
5:25 practice foxtrot dancing. You never want to be in this TA lag.
5:24 at this point of the match, you should pick up that every time you got close to him, he shielded. Need to be looking out for these behavioural habits & punish them for it.
5:22 potential Bair, or if you weren’t feeling it, falling Nair (& get a TA Dtilt or FW1 off it. Weren’t gonna get much off it anyways).
Looked like your Bair was too late by the looks of things =/
5:20 bad Dtilt
5:17 no need to shield here whilst charging Limit. Only thing he could hit you from there was Fsmash which is reactable
5:15 I can assume Limit BB was accidental here RIP
5:14 cute Phantom stuffing his approach
5:13 bad drift in while he Dair’d into your shield. Just drift back & catch him on his landing lag since it was a SH Dair
5:11 this is an instance where the new NL would work RIP
5:07 useless roll
5:04 footsies stuff. That was a bad Fair he did but good avoidance on it.
5:02 not a combo lol. If they DI away (as in go straight up because Zelda’s Dthrow is weird like that) just go for the Uair or if you’re feeling especially baller, Bair
4:58 another panic roll from normal get up. You’re starting to make a pattern of these so keep mindful that you will need to switch up your ledge options.
4:57 terrible decision to dash back (which failed as you got the laggy TA). Some sort of pivot option would do p well here.
4:50 good punish on his Nair. And lol it burned his Limit.
4:48 RIP. Cloud should’ve followed up the Dair with an Uair since he was too slow for the Fair
4:46 got into AD lag? Maybe drifting towards him during the AD to get behind might be best to make it harder for a followup.
4:43 lol
4:36 bad Fsmash
4:34 at 29% & at close range, Dtilt -> Dtilt (11%)/Dsmash (17%)are true. If they don’t DI away the second hit of Dtilt, you can get a Dsmash (23%). Would’ve saved you from doing a decent Jab on shield & a terrible DA, which went unpunished.
4:31 good Dtilt poke & good followup.
4:30 bad DF, Cloud isn’t far enough to harass him with it. Better just to get prepared for what he might do.
Decent Jab he got on you too
4:28 he had you in a tech chase situation, which he could get on reaction. He got too antsy & dropped it though. Running when doing a techchase is a no-no, since it can mess up your chance to catch tech roll in.
4:27 very good whiff punish Utilt. FH Nair would get more hits in though
4:24 don’t like the shield, but I do like the grab
4:21 no need for that, just go for the true & tested shit, especially now that Uair outdamages Dair. He might’ve got a hit before yours as well if he played more aggressively.
4:20 misinput grab
4:16 you both being dumb lol
4:13 don’t like Cloud’s Uair at all. Far too early & gave you a free entry onstage
4:11 I like your Dair a lot, but that Fsmash when he was almost on top of you was p terrible
4:09 terrible, terrible Dair. That should’ve been game right there, but this Cloud has no balls.
4:05 why he tried to Nair Zelda offstage I’ll never know
4:03 good poke, he DI’d well enough to avoid a potential Fair.
4:02 terrible AD on his part, you missed the Uair follow-up from the Dthrow because you DJ’d.
And you misspaced the Bair too =/
3:58 I like that roll read Fair he did on you. I’m not sure if FH Dair would be fast enough to both catch you & get the AC.
I appreciate what he was aiming for with the LCS but it wasn’t the most thought out plan though. Hard to say really. If he predicted away LBB would’ve killed you.
3:56 lol what were you trying to do here?
3:54 I feel like he should’ve just waited & charge Limit since he had all the stage control he really needs.
3:52 drifted too far for the Bair.
What was that Usmash lol?
3:50 lol FW sucks on shield. It’s never a good idea unless you’re far enough to avoid a shield grab (even though his Grab came out before the FW hitbox but my point still stands)
3:42 good spacing on his part to avoid the Fsmash & the whiff punish Jab
3:40 got so antsy after he charged his Limit lol
Decent Dtilt on shield. That shield grab was far too late. And you got outspaced by a hair & died. RIP

(I think now that her grabs got more range that should’ve connected but aww well)

Stocks:
- Dair edgeguard

Stocks lost:
- Dsmashed on a whiff pivot grab
- LCS whiff punish on grab

Notes:
- Greed was pretty shield heavy this game, but you didn't get much with grabs at all this game. You need to recognise these subtle patterns in his game & punish him for it.
- Conversely, you need to be wary of whatever habits you have in your game, like the normal getup to roll from the ledge, which you did often enough to get badly punished for it.
- Work on your analogue drifts, they are especially important for LK spacing & you missed a few here & there & an opportunity to end the game because of it (3:52)
- You need to stop doing Fsmashes lol
